Introduction

English-Taught Bachelor’s Program
Department of English, Tamkang University

The English-Taught Bachelor’s Program in the Department of English at Tamkang University is administered under the Center for Holistic Education. The program provides a fully English-medium academic environment designed to develop students’ advanced language proficiency, critical thinking skills, and global perspectives. Through a curriculum that integrates language training, literature, linguistics, and cultural studies, students gain both academic depth and the communication skills necessary for participation in international academic and professional contexts.

All major courses in the program are conducted in English, allowing students to develop strong academic communication abilities while engaging with a broad range of topics in English studies. The curriculum is designed to strengthen students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills while also introducing them to important areas of the discipline, including literary analysis, linguistic inquiry, and intercultural communication.

A distinctive feature of the program is the Junior Year Study Abroad requirement. Students are required to spend their entire third year studying at one of Tamkang University’s overseas partner universities. During this year abroad, students take academic courses in English while experiencing different educational systems and cultural environments. This overseas study experience enables students to broaden their academic perspectives and develop intercultural competence through direct engagement with international communities.

In addition, students in the English-Taught Program are required to reside in university dormitories during their first year. Living on campus provides opportunities for students to participate actively in campus life, build supportive peer networks, and experience a diverse learning community.

By combining English-medium instruction, international academic mobility, and residential learning, the English-Taught Bachelor’s Program offers students a comprehensive undergraduate education that prepares them for graduate study and careers in an increasingly interconnected world.
